The Blister Study
We are currently recruiting for a large study along with a number of other hospitals in the UK and Germany to discover what is the best treatment for Bullous Pemphigoid.
Bullous Pemphigoid is a skin condition mainly affecting elderly people, which results in tense, itchy blisters and painful skin erosions that can affect the whole body. It is an auto-immune disease which means that the immune system makes antibodies against parts of the patient’s own skin in error. In Bullous Pemphigoid, these antibodies are directed at the area between the top layer of skin (the epidermis) and the next layer (the dermis) . It is a serious medical condition which needs treatment. We want to find out whether doxycycline (a member of the tetracycline family of antibiotics) would be a good alternative to prednisolone ( a corticosteroid) for treating Bullous Pemphigoid.
We don’t know whether prednisolone or doxycycline is the better treatment for Bullous Pemphigoid. To find out, we need to compare these different treatments in a clinical trial. In this study one group will have prednisolone tablets and the other group will have doxycycline tablets.
